The blaze broke out around 5 a.m., Monday, Jan. 24, in New Canaan, on Silvermine Road.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they found the three-stall barn with a hayloft fully engulfed in flames,  said Assistant Fire Chief Albe Bassett, of the New Canaan Fire Department.

Two horses were out of the barn and none were injured, Bassett said.

The owners said luckily, the horses wear blankets and like to walk around the yard at night and lay in the leaves so none were inside when the fire ignited.

The barn was a total loss.

The department was assisted by firefighters from Stamford, Vista, and Wilton fire departments.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
